Meet at trailhead on Dutton Rd.

All are welcome to join us for our monthly Walk in the Woods. Even dogs are welcome—on leash of course! This time we will return to the Memorial Forest in Sudbury. This is a flat walk that will take about one hour. Known as the Desert due to the prevalence of well-drained sandy soils, this 900-acre conservation area (south of Hudson Road) provides an unusual diversity of habitats: oak-pine forest, pitch pine-scrub oak, red maple swamp, and wet meadows intersected by two streams.
Henry Ford purchased the land in the 1930s and sold it to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Massachusetts in 1950. The Club established a memorial forest and wildlife sanctuary in tribute to those who served their country in World War II. In 1999, after Sudbury Valley Trustees had managed the land for two years, the club gave the land to SVT with the mandate to continue its protection. The walk will take us to view the Mass Central Rail Trail—and perhaps a peek at the new bridge over Hop Brook. See the trail map.
We won’t go if the weather is inclement or the walking conditions are hazardous. If in doubt, the cancellation announcement will be made the morning of April 19 at the 10 am Worship Service.
Hold the date for our next spring walk on May 17, 2026.
