Community Read of the Frederick Douglass Essay: “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July”

Saturday, June 24, 2023, 10 am

Join us for a community read of the Frederick Douglass Essay: “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.”

This event will take place at First Parish, and we are co-hosting with Athina Education to mark Juneteenth and July 4th with Reading Frederick Douglass Together in Sudbury! This event will begin outside (weather permitting) on the terrace. After the group read-aloud of Douglass’s 4th of July Address, everyone is invited indoors to participate in a community art project. A similar event took place at the Wayside Inn last year.

You can sign up to take part in the reading through this SignUpGenius. You are also welcome to show up on the day of the event. There are 45 sections in the speech, and some are long, so we can accommodate anyone who would like to participate.
