The First Parish “Open Table” Volunteer Team Welcomes New Members

You, too, can help fight hunger in Metrowest.

The First Parish Open Table Volunteer Team Welcomes New Members.

For nearly ten years now, on the fourth Monday of the month, volunteers from First Parish have donned aprons at the Open Table food pantry in Maynard to help people from nearby communities have fresh food. The Open Table food pantry gives away fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, non-perishable groceries and other staples, in a grocery-store-like setting. Open Table provides other help as well, partnering with other organizations to provide guests with support services such as legal and medical advice, information about housing or fuel assistance, and other services. And on Tuesdays Open Table hosts a community dinner, open to all.

“Open Table is such a well-run, friendly place. It’s so gratifying to be able to help. And I just love giving away food!”

Susan Stocker, Open Table volunteer from First Parish.

As a pantry volunteer you’ll help guests shop, check out, and bag their groceries. For “our Monday”, First Parish pantry volunteers sign up for a 2½ hour shift, starting either at 2:30 pm or at 5 pm in downtown Maynard. Open Table also has other volunteer opportunities besides helping in the pantry, and other shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It’s just a once a month commitment, for a couple hours, and it makes a big difference to hungry families and elders.
