Coming Up in RE

What’s happening this coming Sunday in our Religious Education Program for Children and Youth (through grade 8):

Children’s Religious Education at First Parish of Sudbury

First Parish of Sudbury will be offering wonderful Religious Exploration programs this year for children and youth on each Sunday.

Our Nursery: Ages 0-4, are now taking part in their own curriculum! Our littlest UU’s receive loving care from two of our amazing volunteers each week from First Parish, and those age one to four are able to take part in songs, stories, and arts and crafts geared towards building a foundation for Religious Exploration that will continue throughout their time here at First Parish. This caring and nurturing environment is designed to foster love and inclusion from the very beginning of what we hope will be a lifelong exploratory process.

Our preschool aged children ages 4-7 will gather weekly in the Commons for Spirit Play! This group will have programming designed to explore topics  through stories, art, and discussion, such as  cultivating appreciation and understanding of world religions, engaging in social justice activities, celebrating holidays and seasons, and building community.

Our UU Explorers, ages 8-14, will gather each week in the commons to engage in a customized curriculum designed to explore many of the previously mentioned topics, as well as fostering an understanding of our UU principles, and a better awareness of self and of others. This is an amazingly dynamic group, and our aim is to provide an environment in which each child feels comfortable to bring their whole selves each and every time we meet. This year we will be working on our “Free to Be Me” wall, a living collage which is designed to grow and change with the children throughout the year, as a living testament to all they have learned and accomplished here at First Parish. Photos will be posted soon!

On some Sundays, all of our children and youth (through grade 8) meet together for a special social justice activity or holiday celebration.

Religious Exploration May 26th

Religious Exploration- In today’s world, it’s easy to confuse needs versus wants. This week, the children of First Parish will be creating a planning board in order to be able to tell the difference and will have the opportunity to explore their own short-term and long-term needs and wants. Part of being empowered is being able to stand up for yourself, and in order to do that, you first need to know yourself. This class is all about ‘know thyself’, but frames it in a constructive and philosophical way. Please Note...

Religious Exploration In May – This month is all about empowering our children! What does it take to make kids feel secure enough in themselves to tackle the world we live in? It starts with knowing themselves; this month we are going to take a look at children who are changing the world, get a firm grasp on who we are as individuals and a group, and figure out what things are important to us as a young community of First Parish. This month’s work will begin to set the stage for our upcoming 2019-2020 year! Please Note –...

Religious Exploration April

Religious Exploration- What does it mean to be whole? Each week those that welcome us to First Parish invite us to bring our “whole selves” to our meetinghouse but how many of us understand what it means to be unified with the self, complete, or whole? This month the children of First Parish will be exploring the concept of the “whole self”, discussing what that means and untangling the many pieces that make us unique individuals. All about self-exploration, this month’s goal is to allow each of us to explore...

Religious Exploration March 24th

Religious Exploration- Last Sunday the children had popcorn theology class to begin exploring, in a contemporary way, the stories found in the Bible. Our study of Catholicism this weeks will be all about the myths and legends of a faith. We will hear about: The Creation myth, Noah’s Ark, Adam & Eve, Joseph’s Coat, David & Goliath, and Jonah in the belly of the fish. The children will see how things like Joseph’s story, or the story of Passover are shared among the religions we’ve learned about and how they tie...

Religious Exploration for March

Religious Exploration- This month our exploration of other religions continues; we are moving forward into our study of Catholicism. Last week we wrapped up Islam and reviewed our time spent on Judaism, this week brings new iconography, cultural practices, and rituals. The Roman Catholic church is the largest in the world with approximately 1.3 billion Catholics baptized worldwide as of 2016; what makes us similar and what sets us apart? This month the children of First Parish will find out! Please Note – Religious Exploration at First...

Religious Exploration February 24th

Religious Exploration- In the Islamic culture, the Kaaba is a huge black stone structure that sits at the heart of the Grand Mosque, Islam’s most sacred place of worship. Some of its parts are connected to important episodes in Islamic tradition. The Kaaba is said to have been built by the prophet Abraham and his son Ishamet; this week the children of First Parish will learn about this important piece of Islamic history and make their own replicas of the Kaaba! Please Note – Religious Exploration at First Parish is in need of...
