First Parish Launches Meetinghouse of Sudbury & Online Apparel Store!

Posted by on Dec 12, 2019 in Community, General News, Stewardship

In order to protect the historic legacy of our Sudbury Town Center, the members of the First Parish of Sudbury are pleased to invite you to become a Friend of the Meetinghouse on the Sudbury Common! Our hope is that those who have had an opportunity to be sheltered in the prodigious arms of this historic Meetinghouse, and find its presence comforting and an important part of the Historic Sudbury Town Center, will be inspired to join us on the journey of its care. The members of First Parish have been the consistent caretakers of the Meetinghouse’s for over 375 years. After embarking over the last several years on greening the Meetinghouse with solar panels, a new state-of-the-art kitchen, and several landscape additions, we would like to invite all who benefit from our Meetinghouse to feel inspired to contribute to its further upkeep by contributing to a Meetinghouse Preservation Fund and becoming a Friend of the Meetinghouse of Sudbury.

Support the Meetinghouse today with the purchase of Historic Sudbury gear for the entire family! Proceeds from apparel sales will support the painting, restoration of the bell tower, and ongoing maintenance of the Meetinghouse.

The online store is open through Sunday, December 22, and all orders will be shipped directly to the address of your choice early in the new year.

Enjoy shopping for the Meetinghouse, and THANK YOU for your support!

“Four Scenarios” Task Force is Forming. Join us!

Posted by on Jun 6, 2018 in Stewardship

There is concern about First Parish’s long-range financial position. To be clear, we are in no immediate danger, but at this year’s Annual Congregational Meeting (ACM), the congregation approved a significant deficit budget that will be covered from funds from the Stability Fund (our savings cushion) and from surpluses from previous years.

Thanks to the care shown by many people who came before us, First Parish is able to continue our current level of expenses, even with reduced revenues. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to look at our financial position in a thoughtful manner and make informed decisions for the future.

Given that we passed a budget that will draw funds from the Stability Fund for this Fiscal Year, there will be a couple of efforts to address the future finances of First Parish. One was sketched out in the Fincom Annual Report:

Please note that FinCom is comfortable with only 1 year with this level of negative cash flow and accumulated surplus usage. The Board has approved our request to provide a policy and plan for use of accumulated surplus by March 1, 2019.
Our suggestion would be to create a group from among the membership, BOT, and FinCom empowered to further define cash policy as the cornerstone for an updated Strategic Plan.

In addition, Rev. Marjorie’s Minister’s Report at the ACM suggested undertaking a strategic plan starting in the spring of 2019.

Jan Hardenbergh, the acting Assistance Treasurer, submitted the following motion at the ACM, which was approved, with the understanding that Jan would be Chair:

To form a congregational task force to prepare four scenarios for the financial future of First Parish. Each scenario will consist of different revenue and expenditure assumptions. These scenarios will be presented to the congregation next January.

About the Four Scenarios Task Force

The Four Scenarios Task Force will generate four possible future situations, from optimistic to pessimistic, that First Parish might find itself in, based on a range of assumptions about the driving forces of our finances. We will present our report to the congregation in January 2019. This report will help other groups generate policy for our long range Strategic Plan.

Here is a link to a short presentation about creating scenarios that gives an idea of the process: Scenario-Planning-Slides_MaryCook-LLC.pdf

If you are interested in participating please contact Jan at .

More information about the financial situation of First Parish is available on the internal website (the Village). There you will find the 2018 Annual Report, the FY2019 Approved Budget, and the Funds Description. If you have trouble logging into the Village website, contact Jan Hardenbergh or Tom Yelton.

First Parish of Sudbury Annual Stewardship Canvass, 2017-18

Greetings from your Board of Trustees, this year’s Stewardship Team.

As you know we rely on the generous contributions of members and friends to fund our ministry at First Parish of Sudbury. This year, we ask you to try to increase your last year’s pledge by 9% or more, to support the ministry, grow our Religious Education program, pay the staff fair compensation, fund our varied and enriching programs, and more.

There are three ways for you to complete and return the enclosed pledge card:

1) plan to bring it forward during this Sunday’s service, March 26. Be part of this community event supporting FPS.

2) mail or bring your card to the FPS office.

3) wait for one of the canvassers to call you at home to discuss your pledge.

Thank you one and all! Let’s make our canvass a huge success to fund the dreams and goals of our congregation.

Documents for you:

Thanks again to the many members (45+ adults and youth) who have contributed to the development of the FPS strategic plan. Our goal is to determine what direction we want to go long term and why, and how best to get there.  FPS Strategic Plan Framework 2014

We began in January of 2014 brainstorming with the Trustees to prepare for a meeting of the congregation in March 2014. This 5-hour meeting generated strong ideas for strategies and activities, as well as vivid images of what FPS can be. Additionally, Susan Curnan and I met with the youth group in June at Ferry Beach to engage them in the planning process – again with excellent ideas to put into action and lots of congruence with information generated in the earlier sessions. The Trustees took all of this information and distilled it into a one-page overarching framework. We also have kept all of the ideas from the congregation and youth meetings to use as appropriate in more detailed planning and have made these available to the committees.

So, what’s happening in 2015?

Funding our Future – Pledge Drive Begins March 2

Posted by on Mar 1, 2014 in Stewardship

Join us Sunday March 2 to kick off the 2014 Pledge Drive, and stay for the celebratory lunch afterwards.

The Board of Trustees’ financial vision for next year includes the following key initiatives, among others: close our budget gap, provide salary increases to our staff, fund our website, increase our Living Our Faith outreach, and contribute our fair share dues to the UUA and to our district.

These are the basics for keeping First Parish of Sudbury vibrant, but what else might we do if we had the funds? If you believe, as we on the Stewardship Team do, that our world NEEDS the values and connections fostered by Unitarian Universalist congregations like ours, then please, let your checkbook speak of your commitment.
