Welcoming Congregation Committee

The mission of the WCC is to explicitly affirm, welcome, support, and advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons at First Parish, and to educate the congregation and society at large to the prejudice, injustice, intolerance and violence against LGBTQ people.

We know that religious spaces haven’t always been welcoming places for all people, especially when it comes to gender identity and sexual orientation, which led First Parish to pursue the designation of Welcoming Congregation from the Unitarian Universalist Association. As a Welcoming Congregation, we commit to work towards inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people as full members of our community. Being welcoming means striving for radical inclusion, and creating spaces that honor every part of our identities, backgrounds, and experiences.

The goals of the Welcoming Congregation Committee are:

  • to make our meetinghouse a place where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity, are comfortable and welcome;
  • to encourage dialogue and trust between individuals;
  • to integrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life issues into congregational programs, activities and structure, leadership, and
  • to promote a change in homophobic and trans phobic attitudes within our community and society.
