We are excited to welcome Robert Jones to FPS! Robert will be working with us to provide Religious Exploration content, while we are operating remotely. He will create a video lesson each month, geared towards our children, the first of which is available below. Additionally, he will meet twice monthly with our youth, beginning in January.

Robert has worked at First Parish of Weston as their Youth and Family Ministries Coordinator since 2015. Prior to that, he obtained a B.A. in Psychology from Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA and a Masters in Education from Roehampton University in London.

This month, Robert Jones discusses the first UU source: “Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life.”

Here are the passages that Robert read:

Our faith reminds us that wonder is a central source of renewal, so much so that we’ve put it in the first of our UU sources: “Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life.” So what’s one of the ways our faith guides us into becoming a people of renewal? It tells us to “Let wonder wash over you!”

This is the Eye of God. It is also known as the Helix Nebula. It is about 650 light-years away, near the constellation Aquarius. This is one example of the parts of the universe which fill us with wonder. When we look up at night, we see the stars in the sky. They make us wonder about our big questions. Wonder is a part of our Unitarian Universalist religion. It is one of our six Unitarian Universalist sources, in fact, it’s number one. I’m going to read the words. Listen for the words “wonder,” “renewal,” and “life” when I read, and hold up your finger if you can hear them. Here are the words: “Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life.” Lots of words. Did you hear the word “wonder” when I read the first source? “Renewal?” Did you hear the word “life”?
