from our new interim Director of Religious Exploration

News from Religious Exploration:

Hello from RE at First Parish! As many of you know, RE is in a stage of transition, and we are all working together behind the scenes to create a truly engaging and connective ministry for our RE groups! This year, as the interim DRE, I will be working closely with our amazing Religious Exploration Committee to build a curriculum that incorporates the very best of what each of us here at First Parish has to offer. We will be planning RE’s monthly and yearly themes to match those of FPS, to help nurture our inter-generational connections through learning together. After talking to our Explorers to find out what activities they’d like to take part in this year, RE has decided to utilize readings, activities, and social outreach plans from many different platforms. We can’t wait to start Popcorn Theology, led by Sally Sweitzer once or twice each month, which will give relevant context to our monthly themes through popular movie clips and open discussion (did we mention there will be popcorn?) We’ll also delve into Imagine UU, taking a page from Harry Potter’s Social Justice in Action this January, where we’ll spend the month “Fighting the horcrux of poverty,” with a series of outreach projects designed to connect our Explorers to their communities. It promises to be a dynamic year for this 4th to 7th grade group!

In other news, our littlest UUs in the Nursery will soon be starting their own curriculum! Fostering a sense of community and friendship starts early, and no one knows that better than our 0-3-year-old group. These are our big personalities in small packages, and soon they’ll be taking part in their own mini-chalice lighting, stories, and crafts, about fifteen minutes out of the hour. The rest of their time is still reserved for that all-important free play!

Please Note: We still need Nursery volunteers, if you are interested in signing up please follow the link below –

Youth group will meet this month on October 15th, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Commons to discuss the upcoming year and the many projects and opportunities available to them. They’ve expressed a great desire for community service projects and travel; it will be wonderful to watch their year unfold.

I’d like to take this time to say a huge thank to the members of the REC, Mark Trone, Diahanne Lucas, Sally Sweitzer, and Susan Rosenblum. Their hard work and dedication to RE at First Parish is inspiring to say the least, and their support during this time has been absolutely invaluable. You guys are the best!

Last but certainly not least, I’m thrilled to announce that Bailey will be taking on the role of Volunteer Assistant DRE, in charge of our Spirit Play group! Congratulations Bailey and thank you for all of your hard work and commitment to the children here at First Parish.

Warmest Wishes, and here’s to an exciting new RE adventure!

Michele Barkhauer, Interim Director
