Sharing the Plate Sunday, Dec. 6

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless will be the recipient of our Share the Plate this Sunday, December 6. (Each month we share 50-50 our collection with a worthy organization.)

It is committed to ensuring that everyone has a place to call home and works to eradicate homelessness from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. To do so, it works with community health centers, public school districts and early intervention workers to help identify households that are having a housing crisis and then offers quick assistance to ensure that they remain stably housed. The Coalition also provides beds to children so that they can have a good night’s sleep (and other tools to enable them to have good educations), needed furniture, and —for teenagers — clothing. It works to reduce environmental triggers in the homes of low-income families and individuals living with chronic respiratory diseases, and it lobbies for laws that help to eradicate homelessness. Although the Massachusetts “right to shelter law” entitles every family to a roof over their heads the day that they qualify for emergency housing, it does not provide  homes for the thousands of people sheltered in hotels and other shelters when they are homeless. The lack of affordable housing has increased the number of homeless families in Massachusetts 25% since 2007.

Please give generously to help the Mass Coalition for the Homeless.
