Coming Up in RE

What’s happening this coming Sunday in our Religious Education Program for Children and Youth (through grade 8):

Children’s Religious Education at First Parish of Sudbury

First Parish of Sudbury will be offering wonderful Religious Exploration programs this year for children and youth on each Sunday.

Our Nursery: Ages 0-4, are now taking part in their own curriculum! Our littlest UU’s receive loving care from two of our amazing volunteers each week from First Parish, and those age one to four are able to take part in songs, stories, and arts and crafts geared towards building a foundation for Religious Exploration that will continue throughout their time here at First Parish. This caring and nurturing environment is designed to foster love and inclusion from the very beginning of what we hope will be a lifelong exploratory process.

Our preschool aged children ages 4-7 will gather weekly in the Commons for Spirit Play! This group will have programming designed to explore topics  through stories, art, and discussion, such as  cultivating appreciation and understanding of world religions, engaging in social justice activities, celebrating holidays and seasons, and building community.

Our UU Explorers, ages 8-14, will gather each week in the commons to engage in a customized curriculum designed to explore many of the previously mentioned topics, as well as fostering an understanding of our UU principles, and a better awareness of self and of others. This is an amazingly dynamic group, and our aim is to provide an environment in which each child feels comfortable to bring their whole selves each and every time we meet. This year we will be working on our “Free to Be Me” wall, a living collage which is designed to grow and change with the children throughout the year, as a living testament to all they have learned and accomplished here at First Parish. Photos will be posted soon!

On some Sundays, all of our children and youth (through grade 8) meet together for a special social justice activity or holiday celebration.

This coming Sunday, May 28, Alorie had planned to be part of a Quaker-style worship. By now many may have received news that Alorie tragically passed away Tuesday night, succumbing to injuries from a car accident last Friday. We encourage members and friends to join in for this service, to be here to support, remember and love one another in Alorie’s memory. Children may have questions and we expect that they will be aware that something has happened as so many in our congregation will be experiencing grief and shock this Sunday. Therefore,...

This Sunday is our Rites of Passage Sunday! We will honor the growth and commitment that every child in our religious exploration program has made this year with a gift of gratitude and recognition for their participation. We’ll also be celebrating the accomplishments of two cohorts within the grade school program as they cross thresholds that mark unique stages of growth in our children’s journeys, through our First Chalice and new Chrysalis Passage rituals. As we recognize these points of transition in the growth of their moral and...

Spirit Play will look towards our 7th principle as we celebrate May Day and wonder about our place in the interdependent web of life and how best to care for the earth. UU Explorers will continue with their Toolbox of Faith and look at humor as a tool of our faith tradition, using the metaphor of sandpaper. Sandpaper symbolizes humor in that it is a tool which smooths the rough edges of life. In this session, participants will engage in and reflect on humor and laughter, and examine their place in helping us survive and enjoy the life we are...

Spirit Play will learn about our place in the interdependent web of life through the story of “I Love You Sun, I Love You Moon”. They will wonder about what it means to love the Earth, and whether the Earth might also love us! Unitarian Universalism looks to the direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life. UU Explorers will look at the paintbrush as a symbol of personal expression for our...
