Coming Up in RE

What’s happening this coming Sunday in our Religious Education Program for Children and Youth (through grade 8):

Children’s Religious Education at First Parish of Sudbury

First Parish of Sudbury will be offering wonderful religious education programs this year for children and youth on Sundays.

Our birth to two-year-old Chalice Babies receive loving care from a First Parish adult. They are held, played with, and adored.

Our preschool through grade 6 children will gather weekly in the Commons. This group will have programs that explore topics in world religions, engage in social justice activities, celebrate holidays and seasons, and build community.

Our twelve to fourteen-year-old Breakfast Club participants enjoy tasty snacks as they engage in deeper exploration of what it means to be a compassionate and free-thinking young person in today’s world. The group will help select what themes they will focus on during the year.

On some Sundays, all of our children and youth (through grade 8) meet together for a special social justice activity or holiday celebration.

Last Sunday all RE classes gathered together for a special look at homelessness as we thought about our call to help one another. We learned about what the experience is like to be homeless and the many challenges with lack of money and a house, a shower, clean socks, and access to a bathroom. We used cardboard to build temporary shelters and used those to advertise the Walk to End Homelessness through Family Promise on April 8th. Will you join us in this family friendly event? This Sunday Spirit Play will return to their study of creation...

This Sunday we will gather the Spirit Play and UU Explorers classes together for a special look at homelessness as we think about our call to help one another. We’ll learn about what the experience is like from someone who works with the homeless, and hear about a girl who participates with Unitarian Universalists from across the Central Midwest District in No More Turning Away, a program to raise awareness about homelessness and assist homeless people in their local communities. We’ll brainstorm about things we can do to help and...

Spirit Play learned the wonderful story of the Yin and Yang and the Dwarf P’an Ku last Sunday: Before the beginning of day—before the earth or the sky was formed—there was Tao, the Great Original Cause.  All things came from Tao and on Tao all depend. Tao reached everywhere. Tao was smaller than the smallest and greater than the greatest.  In Tao was the power to change all things. So it came about that Tao brought into being the two great elements, the Yang and the Yin, each the opposite of the other. As the Yin and Yang flowed round...

Last week we gathered all our classes together again for a special lesson exploring the theme of searching for truth with love. While the week previous was more on “standing up for” truth, this week was more about the “searching” and the different perspectives that people have. Participants were told the story of the blind men and the elephant (which the picture depicts here) — in which a number of blind men came to an elephant. Somebody told them that it was an elephant. The blind men asked, ‘What is the...

Last week we gathered all the RE classes together to talk about the Women’s Marches and how seeking and standing up for truth with love can translate into non-violent social change work. I was really impressed with how many of the kids knew people that had marched and some of the reasons for why they were marching. We talked about what truth means and how it is important to stand up for the truth. We talked about one of the most important truths in Unitarian Universalism, which is our first principle of the inherent worth and dignity of...

Spirit Play has been learning about different creation stories from around the world. Last week they learned a Hindu creation story in which Lord Brahma became lonely. He split himself in two and became male and female. Then he became one again. He then split himself in two again, breathed and from his breath created men and women. He created grass, flowers, trees and plants of all kinds. Next he created all the animals and insects that live on the land from parts of his body. From other parts of himself he made birds to fly in the air and...

This Sunday Spirit Play will begin to look at different Creation myths from around the world. Creation myths are a wonderful window into ways different religions and cultures think about the world, as well as connecting to the mystery and majesty of our amazing universe. UU Explorers will explore the Blake covenant phrase to “seek the truth in love.” Through the story of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), participants discover our Unitarian heritage of seeking truth and our calling to act on our understanding of what is true and...
