Coming Up in RE

What’s happening this coming Sunday in our Religious Education Program for Children and Youth (through grade 8):

Children’s Religious Education at First Parish of Sudbury

First Parish of Sudbury will be offering wonderful religious education programs this year for children and youth on Sundays.

Our birth to two-year-old Chalice Babies receive loving care from a First Parish adult. They are held, played with, and adored.

Our preschool through grade 6 children will gather weekly in the Commons. This group will have programs that explore topics in world religions, engage in social justice activities, celebrate holidays and seasons, and build community.

Our twelve to fourteen-year-old Breakfast Club participants enjoy tasty snacks as they engage in deeper exploration of what it means to be a compassionate and free-thinking young person in today’s world. The group will help select what themes they will focus on during the year.

On some Sundays, all of our children and youth (through grade 8) meet together for a special social justice activity or holiday celebration.

This coming Sunday, May 28, Alorie had planned to be part of a Quaker-style worship. By now many may have received news that Alorie tragically passed away Tuesday night, succumbing to injuries from a car accident last Friday. We encourage members and friends to join in for this service, to be here to support, remember and love one another in Alorie’s memory. Children may have questions and we expect that they will be aware that something has happened as so many in our congregation will be experiencing grief and shock this Sunday. Therefore,...

This Sunday is our Rites of Passage Sunday! We will honor the growth and commitment that every child in our religious exploration program has made this year with a gift of gratitude and recognition for their participation. We’ll also be celebrating the accomplishments of two cohorts within the grade school program as they cross thresholds that mark unique stages of growth in our children’s journeys, through our First Chalice and new Chrysalis Passage rituals. As we recognize these points of transition in the growth of their moral and...

Spirit Play will hear the story of Maria Mitchell, a nineteenth century Unitarian who became the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer. She received a gold medal from the King of Denmark for discovering a comet. They will wonder about the great things that women do and what the stars may have to teach them, too, on Mother’s Day. UU Explorers will explore the significance of gratitude, learn a gratitude meditation, and then put that energy towards our mothers on this special day. Breakfast Club will meet in the...

Spirit Play will look towards our 7th principle as we celebrate May Day and wonder about our place in the interdependent web of life and how best to care for the earth. UU Explorers will continue with their Toolbox of Faith and look at humor as a tool of our faith tradition, using the metaphor of sandpaper. Sandpaper symbolizes humor in that it is a tool which smooths the rough edges of life. In this session, participants will engage in and reflect on humor and laughter, and examine their place in helping us survive and enjoy the life we are...

Spirit Play will learn about our place in the interdependent web of life through the story of “I Love You Sun, I Love You Moon”. They will wonder about what it means to love the Earth, and whether the Earth might also love us! Unitarian Universalism looks to the direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life. UU Explorers will look at the paintbrush as a symbol of personal expression for our...
