Coming Up in RE

What’s happening this coming Sunday in our Religious Education Program for Children and Youth (through grade 8):

Children’s Religious Education at First Parish of Sudbury

First Parish of Sudbury will be offering wonderful religious education programs this year for children and youth on Sundays.

Our birth to two-year-old Chalice Babies receive loving care from a First Parish adult. They are held, played with, and adored.

Our preschool through grade 6 children will gather weekly in the Commons. This group will have programs that explore topics in world religions, engage in social justice activities, celebrate holidays and seasons, and build community.

Our twelve to fourteen-year-old Breakfast Club participants enjoy tasty snacks as they engage in deeper exploration of what it means to be a compassionate and free-thinking young person in today’s world. The group will help select what themes they will focus on during the year.

On some Sundays, all of our children and youth (through grade 8) meet together for a special social justice activity or holiday celebration.

Spirit Play will learn about our place in the interdependent web of life through the story of “I Love You Sun, I Love You Moon”. They will wonder about what it means to love the Earth, and whether the Earth might also love us! Unitarian Universalism looks to the direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life. UU Explorers will look at the paintbrush as a symbol of personal expression for our...

Don’t forgot to bring in your canned goods on Easter Sunday! We are conducting a food drive for Easter Sunday, that will be donated to Open Table Food Pantry of Concord and Maynard. After beginning in the Sanctuary, Religious Education Sunday will move all together to the Commons for Children’s Chapel with an Easter message and then, instead of the traditional egg hunt, the children will have the opportunity to look for the canned goods (outside weather permitting) and then all will be brought to the Food Pantry. Please bring the...

Don’t forgot to bring in your canned goods either this Sunday or by the start of services on Easter Sunday! We are conducting our annual food drive for Easter Sunday, that will be donated to Open Table Food Pantry of Concord and Maynard. Next Sunday on Easter, we will place all the canned goods outdoors in the yard right at 10am (or in the lower level classrooms in case of rain). During Religious Education we will move all together to the Commons for an Easter message and then, instead of the traditional egg hunt, the children will have...

This week we will gather all classes together to celebrate the return of spring by making fairy houses! We had so much fun with this last year — we thought about what it would be like to relate to the natural world if we were really REALLY tiny — precisely the size of a fairy! We then used collected natural objects, such as twigs, moss, sea shells, pine cones, and small rocks, to build little habitats and houses for the fairies. What sort of fairies do you think would like our houses? It is interesting to look at the natural world...

Spirit Play heard the story of the Great Flood and Noah’s Ark last Sunday. It is a story that ends with a Covenant. As the rains ended God spoke a blessing, and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky. “This rainbow,” God said, “is a sign that never again will the world be destroyed by flood; and in times to come when I cloud the sky with rain, afterward you will see a rainbow, and you will remember my promise, a promise made to you and to every living creature in the world.” UU Explorers will continue to explore tools and objects as...

Spirit Play will learn a Yoruba creation myth. In the story, Obatala, a heavenly being, isn’t content in his heavenly abode, and so he creates a chain of gold on which to descend down to earth and create the world. UU Explorers will look at the value of integrity and use a compass to symbolize integrity. We define as our inner moral compass a quality of Unitarian Universalist faith. We will discuss how we listen to our inner voices and what it feels like when our moral compass swings toward truth. We will emphasize that to discern what is...

Spirit Play heard the true story last week of Owen, a 650 lb hippo from Kenya, and Mzee, a giant male tortoise, 130-years-old, named Mzee, which in the Swahili language means “old man”.  Owen decided that Mzee should be his adopted mother. Now they swim, eat and sleep together all the time. It is a beautiful story about how much we need one another, no matter whether we are different species! UU Explorers are continuing with their “Toolbox of Faith”. This week using a magnifying glass to talk about the need to continue to question...

Religious Education March 5th

Last Sunday Spirit Play  heard the story of the Great Kapok tree — a story of speaking truth to power and standing on the side of love as the animals of the rain forest stand up for the Great Kapok tree and prevent it from being chopped down. This Sunday they will look through another lens at our very important 7th principle: the interconnection of all life and the importance of valuing our Earth. UU Explorers will move this Sunday into a new series of lessons called the Toolbox of Faith, which  invites participants to reflect on the...
