our meetinghouse and our church

I want to urge us to use the term meetinghouse to refer to the whole building and the Old Historic Meetinghouse for the part of it that was built in 1797 and was originally just the Sanctuary and the Parish Hall with the Old South Foyer to connect them. The building of the new meetinghouse is well chronicled in Hudson’s History of Sudbury. The word church has at least four deep meanings and 18  specific definitions in the OED. The first deep meaning is, as the OED puts it, the Lord’s House. Church also refers to the worship service, the congregation, the dogma of a denomination, and all Christians collectively. So, we have plenty of occasions to use the word church, but to use it to refer the building cuts one of the connections to our rich past.
